Callisto

True Nature Unfolds (CD) 2004 Fullsteam Records

There comes no end to the number of quality depressive metal/rock bands from Finland. Callisto is the latest to be added to the impressive list. This band from Turku made a brilliant debut album, positioning itself comfortably close to deities of the melodic dark metal genre like mid period Katatonia and Opeth.

The ten songs offered on this album are very diverse in terms of their structures, execution and general ‘feel’. However despite the variety, the album stays beautifully focused, as all tracks are inspired by a similar emotion of melancholy. Apart from the abovementioned bands, glimpses of acts as diverse as Neurosis, Mar De Grises, Ulver and Godspeed you black emperor! come to mind.

Although the main vocal delivery is limited to harsh grunts and screams, a plethora of session musicians and guest vocalists add depth, emotion and essence to the compositions. Be it the addition of ambient landscapes, the use of such ‘unconventional’ (for rock standards) instruments as glockenspiel, saxophone and cello, unexpected female vocals etc: each track hides a pleasant surprise, an unusual twist, an extraordinary moment of excellence.

Callisto managed to produce a dark metal album of very high and consistent quality. It is a strong recommendation to anyone who enjoys emotion, melody and genuine melancholy in their music (and who doesn’t?)

Forgotten Tomb

Springtime Depression (CD) 2003 Adipocere Records

If you liked 'Songs To Leave', chances are you will feel the same about 'Springtime Depression'. They are quite similar, though 'Springtime Depression' is a lot more black metal orientated than the former, though not to the extent of Obscura Arcana Mortis. It is more comparable to bands like Abyssic Hate and other depressing black metal bands than doom-metal, but that doesn't stop it from being an awesome album.

Right from the first few seconds you can spot the similarities with Katatonia and even Dolorian, though clouded in the typical black metal buzzing guitars. 'Todestrieb' really sets the feel for the entire disc, with an ice-cold atmosphere and amazingly good black metal style shrieking, which sounds very tortured and powerful, much like on 'Songs To Leave', but even more so. The relentless blackened doom onslaught doesn't let up there as the album blasts through 'Scars' and 'Daylight Obssession' with a fury not often seen in doom, the guitars shrieking out their despondent opus, backed by slowish pounding drums which stop everything spiralling out of control. The highlight of the album is far and away the closing track, 'Subway Apathy', which starts out sounding quite like Dolorian, quite atmospheric with a repetitive riffing, before the tracks launches itself into pain and misery that reminds me a lot of the opener, 'Entombed By Winter' on 'Songs To Leave', only slower, heavier, just plain better. Which pretty much sums up my opinion of this release: better than 'Songs To Leave', which is brilliant in its own right.

Dolorian

Dolorian (CD) 2001 Wounded Love Records

It seems that our good Lord chose the year of the space odyssey to bestow his doom on us. Only the third month of this sacred year, and we are already blessed with new doom releases from Evoken, Cathedral, Warhorse...and now also the second opus of Dolorian! These young Finnish masters use unique, desolate paint brushes of grey coulours to catapult themselves in the absolute dark-metal top and in one of the first places of my personal favourites!

The main difference with their previous album 'When all the laughter has gone', seems to be the different use of the vocals. This time, the band chose to only use silent whispers, without the harsh, horrifying screams of their first album. This contributes to the creation of an undescribable dark, trance-like atmosphere of utter nihilism and despair. Their typical guitar sound, that bathes in weird echo effects, still distinguishes this band from the rest of the scene.

This is one of those albums that leave you completely emotionally exhausted after each listen, and yet you keep pressing the repeat button over and over again. We dark music fans are such masochists!

Skepticism

Farmakon (CD) 2003 Red Stream

What an album. It does wander from 9/10 to 10/10 depending on being in the right mode. At one point I reckoned this to be the best album ever made, but I've reigned back from that now. Still unmistakable Skepticism with that church organ beating out the funeral dirges, this one's their most progressive metal album to date, not in playing technique, but in composition. The feeling is of one journey; moods change cleverly without necessarily keys changing. The simple, unprocessed, wandering lead guitar, taking on the role of a wandering bass, adds to this feel of wandering through experience, whilst other guitars fade in and out of the mix as if portraying the emotions felt on the way.

Hearing this many times now, I'm tempted to say this is a concept album. After the cave and forest exploration of 'The Raven and the Backward Funeral', 'Shred of Light' is just that. It's as if you enter a glade, a chink in the oppressive woodland gloom, and it really does elevate the mood by lifting the 2-ton weight off your chest and allows a bit of refreshing bitterness and brooding anger into the equation. 'Farmakon Process' has a mechanistic process feel to it. With its crashes and almost epic feel, you can't help to think that Skepticism are making something here, perhaps an iron man for the next Sabbath reunion, or a set of coffins for their live act.

The untitled 4th track (shown as a rip on the back cover) is a stunner, a smoothing drone, building up to the body of the composition, which continues to build and pick up speed (yes, speed... for Skepticism!!!), and builds up tension like a pressure cooker. An American Indian style drumbeat is a constant thread such that even when the music stops dead the beat goes on. Actually, the heavy breathing at the end makes it more like the time-beater on a galley ship keeping the oarsmen synchronised. You feel knackered at the end of it. Even if this isn't the best album ever made, this has to be a contender for one of the best tracks. I could rant on about this track forever, but moving on...

'Nowhere' and 'Nothing' have to be the sisters of nihilism, at least in name. They actually have that faster pace and strange gloomy uplifting quality, which sound a contradiction in terms but, then again, it depends on how much pleasure you get from your misery. And that strange 'sour' sounding, wandering guitar reappears as if to reinforce the connection with earlier tracks. 'Nothing' slows it down for the sort of finale you'd expect from Skepticism. If you were to paint a picture by covering canvass in it's entirety with black paint, and then call it a self portrait, that just about sums up the track and the album. It's not blanket dirge, it's not just about hopeless doom, it has all sorts of elements of negativity in it, making it complex and multi-perceptional.

This is an album to be listened to with respect, unrushed and in the right mood. If you down the best wine in the world in one gulp, it'll taste like plonk.

Round 2 for Italians Disarmonia Mundi, this time finally under a label and with the proper support that their music deserves.

My story with this band goes more than a year ago, when I was blown out by their excellent self-released debut album “Nebularium” (also reviewed on the site), I was really impressed with the record and I was eagerly waiting their sophomore effort.

Some line up changes took place when writing material for the album, being the most important the departure of vocalist Benny Bianco Chinto (who also did for us a song by song of the debut album), I must say that I was a little worried about the departure of Benny, because their vocals was one of the best assets of the band. After a while the band got a new vocalist, Bjorn “Speed” Strid, yes, vocalist of Soilwork.

Error number 1: picking as a singer the vocalist of a band that everyone is ripping-off, meaning, clones of Soilwork can be found everywhere nowadays!

Error number 2: Not creating the music much different than Soilwork, meaning, this could be easily the next Soilwork album…

Error number 3: The album was mastered in Sweden, adding more “Soilworkness” to the sound.

Yes I know, my review is one big complain, but this has to be one of my biggest disappointments of the year, I was expecting a killer album full of innovation, instead I got a Soilwork album, and the worst part is, that you won’t find no review which don’t mention that Disarmonia Mundi sounds just like Soilwork.

Nevertheless, I must admit that this is a great album, is not remotely as good as “Nebularium”, but it got its moments, like “Red Clouds”, “Quicksand Symmetry”, “A Mirror Behind” and my personal favorite “Oceangrave”. The use of samples give the music an special touch I must admit, they keyboard and electronic samples makes the overall experience more interesting, the cover art is very nice also.

Even if I’m disappointed at this release, is still a good album, enjoyable and well crafted, too bad that their influences took over their music and their individuality was left over at “Nebularium”, my advice? Fire Bjorn Strid and return to the initial path, until then, the Soilwork tag will be always a part of the band.

ALCHEMIST - Austral Alien

Relapse / Suburban

In the last years, originality has had a rare role in metal music because too many bands were copying their already successful idols. And now, Australia, a country which doesn't have the best metal reputation (although some of the best rock'n'roll music with bands like AC/DC, Rose Tattoo and The Sainst; ed.), presents one of the most unusual bands in metal. Austral Alien is already the fifth album by Alchemist, but I had never heard anything else from them in the past. Although it's sounding unbelievable, Alchemist are combining on their record such different styles as psychedelic, thrash metal, gothic, wave and EBM. Although the opener First Contact is a real brutal straight-in-your-face smasher, the CD is containing more relaxed songs sounding more like contemporary Tiamat. You will find lots of beautiful melodic parts on the record, but it is never entirely giving up its dark and sad atmosphere. Another very positive aspect on Austral Alien are the variable vocals; hardcore emo cries, metal growls or atmospheric voices are part of the vocalist's repertoire. Alchemist may be classified as a cyber metal band, but I can't compare them to anyone else. Everyone's who's tired of traditional stuff will adore Alchemist.

2005 Primordial просто кайф, еще один пример как сделать строгую и серьезную вещь используя чистый вокал.

Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness

[Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness] Vera: Bands with a specific sound, recognizable out of thousands, are almost unique in nowadays scene. But Primordial is one of them. Three years after the intense 'Storm Before Calm' we can eventually delight in a new portion of tonal forlornness and melancholy of the green hills of Ireland. A region full of sagas and legends, a mystical piece of untouched nature where time has no grip on. And neither has it on Primordial's music. Or has it? For they do not close their eyes for the unstable position of the world nowadays. That's why 'The Gathering Wilderness' is filled with painful impotence against the way things go, expressed in pain and rage. Therefore this album of Primordial is still more intense than before.

Most characteristic is the unique voice of singer Nemtheanga, ascending in every composition to expressive heights. More than ever he succeeds in transforming the world's suffers into warm or furious vocal-lines. The firm 'The Golden Spiral' is the first track where the chunky guitar-wall is cleaved through by spirally soloing, blend in the whole in a way it hardly attracts the attention, but yet a major factor in the music of Primordial. Vocals are furious and screaming and the song fades away with tribal drums. Title track 'The Gathering Wilderness' has more a hymnal spirit. Violin, acoustic guitars and folk anthems create a bridge to the eruption of guitars and vocals are very desperate. Majestic double layered guitars and spoken fragments make this song an epos which goes straight to the heart. After the more up tempo 'The Song Of The Tomb' (with primal scream) the band climbs a step higher to ecstasy in the more than seven minutes long 'End Of All Times (Martyrs Fire)'. Music born out of men's deepest emotions is transformed to entwisted guitar sounds and alternate warm and dramatic vocals.

Thoughtful guitars, fresh as the new dawned fields under a slumbering morning sun, open 'The Coffin Ships'. It doesn't take long before the flaming guitar triptych rules again with its swearing character in this song about the failed potato harvest in Ireland, with disastrous famine as result. It has all those familiar elements of the band and leads us further on our journey of primordial significance to reach a higher consciousness. It comes close to the boundaries of pain qua intensity but it has a purifying effect to listen to. A true solemn apex with Nemtheanga at his best! His vocals here remind me a bit of David E. Edwards (16 Horsepower). One of the heaviest tracks of the album is 'Tragedy's Birth', towards the end it lays the link with the black metal roots of the past. All songs take their time to come to full growth and have an average length of eight minutes.

Closing track 'Cities Carved In Stone' is another killer track that leaves you speechless, wondering about so much musical eloquence. Yes, this makes me silent. The swelling drums in the mist of guitars, the sad, almost resigned vocals and the epic movement to a new climax with repetitive guitar idioms, swarming up like claspers of ivy, they settle unaware in your soul with little, but venomous hooks to influence your further life forever.

And who knows where the days go? Will you ever want them back?

PRIMORDIAL - The Gathering Wilderness

7 songs

59:32 minutes

***** ****

Metal Blade

So far, I connected Ireland and metal only to the folk imps Cruachan, not noticing that there has been a band steadily releasing critically acclaimed metal albums since the early 90s. I have no way to compare Primordial's new album The Gathering Wilderness to their four preceding albums, so I have to limit my impression to the seven majestic songs on this release. With all of the songs between seven and ten minutes, Primordial show that long running times are necessary for the heavy sound they are elaborating. And even if my first impression was that this is the missing link between the third and the fourth Bathory album, it would be unfair to dismiss Primordial as just another Viking metal band. First of all they have rather a Celtic background, and more importantly, they had Billy Anderson (Sleep, Neurosis, Melvins) as a producer, a guy who is an expert with heavy but not actually metal sounds.

Already the grooving opener The Golden Spiral proves that this was a very wise choice. Instead of having your typical cold, clean metal sound, you get the more rocking variety, as if Lemmy decided to play heavy metal instead of rock'n'roll. The vocals are very harsh yet always retain a certain melody, while the bass guitar is pumping very strongly for a dark metal band. Primordial even decided against drum triggering, giving the rhythmic backbone a much more organic feel. The songs combine, without an exception, melancholy and heavy rock, never even touching bloodless gothic sounds.

Always steering clear off the clichés, The Gathering Wilderness is one of the few truly original metal albums I have encountered in the last years, and apart from Opeth, you won't find a band which is willing to walk their own way. This should be an album not only suitable for black, dark, thrash, death and heavy metal fans, but has the potential to even arouse emotions in your general public. Highly recommendable!
