Anaal Nathrakh - The Codex Necro

320 kbps https://academ.club/html/emoticons/wink.gif

Generally speaking, if you saw a band with a description such as relentlessly fast black metal with a never-ending maelstrom of blastbeats, the words Panzer Division Marduk and Dark Funeral will come to the forefront of your thoughts. However, by some insane mix of luck and talent, Anaal Nathrakh has managed to play said relentlessly fast black metal with a never-ending maelstrom of blastbeats without too many similarities to the much lauded---and, conversely, much despised---Swedish norsecore bands Dark Funeral and Marduk.

What we have on display with The Codex Necro is schizophrenia given musical form. There really is no other way of putting it. Many people gather from listening to this that V.I.T.R.I.O.L and company were trying to make a soundtrack to the apocalypse, and my guess is they are probably correct. From the song titles to the movie audio samples, everything about this album screams, ITS THE END OF THE WORLD!!! right in your face, and this ferociousness forces you to listen to the music, whether you would like to or not. It isnt any wonder why some people consider this band to be the future of black metal, a third wave, so to speak.

Part of the reason this band is praised as being so original is this ferociousness. The album is chaotic to a degree equal too, if not surpassing, that of brutal death bands such as Cryptopsy and Meshuggah. Frankly, for all of their technical prowess and polyrhythmic capabilities, I honestly can say that Meshuggah could take How to make the craziest music on the planet lessons from these two British psychos≈the music is that intense.

That is not to say, however, that the music is pure noise≈far from it. The opening riff of Submission Is For The Weak, for example, has all the melody of a Darkthrone riff (of the Funeral Moon type, not the Transilvanian Hunger variety), yet still manages to outpace even the fastest of black metal bands without ruining the melody. Opener The Supreme Necrotic Audnance has a very melodic lead line about two minutes into the song, and they play it again (or something similar to it) about three-and-a-half minutes into the song. Throughout the album the band occasionally throws in some similarly melodic guitar lines to give something for the listener to feebly hold onto for the otherwise hellish ride to Armageddon. This is most definitely an important album for black metal, and an essential listen for black metal fans looking for something fresh. In addition, this album shouldnt be too hard for brutal death metal and/or grindcore fans to get accustomed to, so it has the added bonus of being a decent introductory album for fans of other types of extreme metal.

Necrophagist -- Onset Of Putrefaction (Re-release) 2004 @ Willowtip records (North America) / Relapse (rest of the world)

Funerary Dirge - Abyssus abyssum invocat [2003]

Forest of Shadows - Departure [2004, (9,5/10) - Sweden]

Genre: Doom Metal

Label: Firedoom Records

Playing time: 61:05

At first, I thought our Alex wants to kidding me with this “Departure” CD from FOREST OF SHADOWS. “Why does this clown send me Dark Wave-CD?”, were my first thoughts. The opener “Sleeping Death” starts with clean, wailing vocals, a monotonous, clumsy drumming and gloomy piano parts and the first six minutes are very dragging until the tempo then starts to increase slowly. It sounds partly like a mixture of AMORPHIS in their “Tales From The Thousand Lakes” period, DREADFUL SHADOWS and PARAMAECIUM.

This is also the direction for all five tracks. Sluggish, gloomy, haunting and very calm parts change with brutal Metal elements and serve for an incredible tension. This album isn’t very diversified but it’s damn intense. There are some similarities to LAKE OF TEARS milestone “Headstones”, just listen to the instrumental “Black Dormition”, just beautiful.

“Open Wound” is a song, which could also please some OPETH fans. Not to forget is the title track, a fantastic hymn to darkness, just divine!!! (Online February 7, 2005)

God Dethroned - The Lair of the White Worm [2005]

Something has changed in the God Dethroned camp. It's not the first time I've detected it, as there was a hint of a shift in thinking on 2003's 'Into the Lungs of Hell' disc, yet with 'The Lair..' the movement of GD from a full on Dutch band playing American Slayer-esque death/thrash to something akin to a Scandinavian style Amon Amarth is now unmistakable. They sound more Swedish than ever.

GD have never pretended to be original in style, and this is far from it, but in terms of musical progression 'The Liar:' is probably their best work. The most striking aspect about 'The Lair..' is the bands willingness to fully embrace the 'mid-tempo' groove element that was aired on 'Into the Lungs..' And whilst there is ample enough blasting/speed work on this disc to satisfy the regular death rivet head, it is the places where GD temper the fury that works so much better for them. Tracks like 'Rusty Nails' and 'Last Zip of Spit' are built around an Amon Amarth/Bolt Thrower like groove that works well when lined up against the speed driven title track and the tasty 'Salt in your Wounds and the fiery opener 'Nihilism'.

More importantly, the addition of new guitarist Isaac Delahaye has allowed the bands melodic ideas to be fully realized. His melodic lead work and general riff phrasing has had a dramatic Impact on the material presented here. He brings a real Arch Enemy meets almost power metal (gulp!) like melodic touch to the album. Astonishingly, Delahaye has been able to achieve this despite not even being a member of GD some two weeks prior to recording.

Having been dealing out the death for near on a decade, I'm sure the band would agree that they're probably coming into their own as a band. 'The Lair..' looks and sounds like their most mature effort yet. Even the production (which is another killer Berno Studio/Henrik Larsson affair) sounds exquisitely bright, devoid of all previous rough and evil edges. In this regard, perhaps, GD doesn't sound as vicious as they once were, which may disappoint some older underground fans.

'The Lair..' is GD's most accessible album to date. The more melodic tones and tempered speed have allowed this to be achieved. The addition of Isaac Delahaye is a major coup for the band. However, In comparison to the brutal death/thrash metal act they once were, this is probably a tad safe. On the upside, for me at least this is their best work - this album is easily GD's most thought out and thoroughly intelligent album. And whilst I note that in no way does 'The Lair..' bring anything new to the table in terms of musical ideas, they should be extremely pleased with what they have delivered here. Worth a second glance.
