Shining - The Darkroom Sessions 2004

Cult Swedish Black Metal rarities. Raw and primitive Blackened Doom tracks, prior to the later "II" and "III" incarnations of more progressive Nordic Metal tracks that would feature the addition of Norwegian drummer Hellhammer from MAYHEM / ex-KOVENANT!

-- Doomsword - Resound the Horn 2002

Eh, it's about time that my favourite Italians give us greatest Epic Metal. And their second album does just that.

Even though I had to stop short at the first song "Shores Of Vinland" because of the bad vocals! It has a decent BATHORY-flair, no doubt - which for sure had been their plan as well. And as we all know, Quorthon (BATHORY) neither could sing. Roundabout like this the good Deathmaster is sounding here. After the first shock it continues epic and very cranky.

Just like on their killer-debut "Doomsword" doomy and a bit faster (no Speed!) songs balance. Influenced by bands like CANDLEMASS, MEDIEVAL STEEL or MANOWAR these Italians do their own thing. And for me they have four absolute highlights on offer, for one it is the song that bears the same title as the band: "The Doomsword": The most probably slowest track ever. Pure Doom!

Then there would be "MCXIX", an Epic-hammer in best Eighties-tradition! The hymnic "Onward The Battle" with very cranky vocals is also remarkable. But the crowning composition is the closing title-track: "Resound The Horn: Odin's Hall", a song that also would have been one of the highlights on the brilliant debut. This song is incredible!

"For Those Who Die With Sword In Hand" and "The Early Days Of Finn MacCoo" also are great songs, so all fans of the obscure direction will be satisfied for sure, yet should even more buy the debut, if they do not have it at home yet!

- Dry Kill Logic - The Dead And Dreaming [2004] -

Primordial - Spirit The Earth Aflame [2000]

How do those Irish manage to do it? No matter, which bands find their way to us, be it CRUACHAN, WAYLANDER, GEASA or PRIMORDIAL, all somehow are - different...

PRIMORDIAL have consequently continued to tread the path they had taken two years ago with their Hammerheart-debut "A Journey's End". With some few exceptions, the songs come over very doomey and solemn, building up a very intense atmosphere, which holds you in its thrall from the beginning and which also makes it quite difficult to categorize the Irishmen, what is a big plus on their behalf!

The only bands that you could remotely name as direction are MY DYING BRIDE, although PRIMORDIAL are not as melancholic and depressed, and BORKNAGAR in their calmer moments, but they do not reach this strange intensity...

Partly melodic, partly Black Metallic guitars meet mostly deep, theatralic clean vocals and, as a reminiscence of thir Black Metal-past, some croaky vocal-elements and are bound together tightly by slight folky influences.

The info-flyer says "PRIMORDIAL don't consider themselves as Black Metal, Celtic or Pagan band, they are simply PRIMORDIAL." I couldn't have said it better.

Until Death Overtakes Me - Symphony II Absence of Life [2002]

Silently and peacefully, this amazing funeral doom project enters the small funereal scene, adding new dimensions of auditory depression, isolation and nihilism to the most depressive musical realm of this suffering world. Until Death Overtakes Me is an one-man ambient doom project which 'overtakes' most of its depressed counterparts in slow, pounding sounds, depressive atmosphere and incurable pessimism.

The first thing that comes to mind while listening to this work for the first time is -except that the creator of such sick, desolate music must be a chronic resident of a mental clinic- the strong ambient basis and 'feel' it emanates. As such, those doom fans who are into dark ambient as well, should mostly enjoy this work. Like a more 'metallized' version of Raison d' être, the music seems to drift around purposeless, endlessly building up only to fade out again and eventually fall into a horrifying gap of utter nihilism and hopelessness.

While the agonisingly slow orchestral keyboards bring forth vague reminiscences of 19th century classical music (fragments of works of romantic era composers like Ravel and Mussorgski occasionally spring to mind), the ultra deep grunt and distortion guitar lingering in the background remind of the grandeur of the mighty Skepticism. This comparison is even more justified if we consider the fact that also this artist has chosen for the use of unconventional percussion, leaving aside the drums and replacing them with deep, pounding timpani sounds.

However, the resemblance's with the masters of Finnish funeral doom appear to be only superficial after a close inspection; Until death Overtakes Me focuses even more on the ambient side of the sound. This becomes mostly evident with the second track 'In the mist', which consists of endlessly drifting along waves of sound produced by a bass guitar, a bow and reverb effects, while a saxophone appears occasionally in the background adding its own (atonal) colour.

However in my opinion, the third track 'Absence of life' is the absolute highlight of this album, the apogee of pessimism, despair and nihilism served in an ugly package of funereal doom agony. The lyrics of the song leave nothing to the imagination of the listener: 'Reach for the cold-eyes stare dead-unspoken dreams. Absence of will- no joy in life-let me go. Not exactly a highlight of 21st century welfare optimism, right?

This is most probably not everyone's cup of tea and only time will tell if the doom-metal community shall embrace this experimental, ambient doom project in its icecold, purple arms. Until then…'The anger towards this world burns and grows within, together with my fascination and my desire for death'.

Umbra Nihil - Enough or Too Much [2002]

It seems like one new Finnish doom act is popping up after the other. If there was any doubt that Finland is the new Doom country, it should be gone now. Like most of their fellow countrymen, Umbra Nihil offers us nihilistic monotonous doom, but with a bizarre melodic element.

Umbra Nihil sort of reminds me of early Katatonia mixed with some sparse elements of early My Dying Bride, but somehow it doesn't sound like either of these bands. Their music is much more catatonic and nihilistic. While the music can be fairly melodic, it always remains slow and bleak, making sure that the experience of doom lasts. Everything has been down tuned and even the grunts sound as if they are coming from some lower plane of existence. The more melodic sections however keep the whole from being pure depression. As such creating a rather odd situation, low down doom that hovers in a state of eternal limbo.

A song like 'Determination' really pulls you down with it. While the vocalist sounds as if he is drowning, the listener seems to drown along with him, being pulled further and further down into the music and not being able to breathe. Like the song itself is trying to suffocate you. Oddly enough the song after that 'Water in Lungs' sounds as if you have already drowned. It has a sort of aquatic and surreal feel to it. It conjures up an image of some drowned corpse floating in the water, looking out of it's watery eyes, somehow still trying to reach out to the world.

There are moments when the band reminds me of Aarni (which whom they will actually release a split). Both bands have that odd vibe around them. This type of music neither lifts you up, nor brings you down. It keeps you in a continuous and uncomfortable state of limbo (and yes, this is a compliment). This really is music to suffer to for eternity. Dead in the water, and not going anywhere. Hopeless, meaningless, empty.
